What programs does Black Girls Dive Foundation offer to the community?

BGDF offers the STREAMS program, which is a nationally recognized aquatic based program.

What is the age range for participants?

The program is for Middle and High school girls who are at least nine years of age.

What areas do you serve?

Black Girls Dive Foundation currently serves three states. Our New Jersey location serves the Mercer County Area. The Georgia location serves Atlanta and surrounding counties, and the Maryland location serves the Baltimore and surrounding areas,

What is the cost to participate in the STREAMS program?

There is no cost associated with participating in the educational program. Certifications are a separate cost from training and STEM classes. Parents are expected to cover this cost. Parents would pay PADI directly through the SCUBA instructor. We cover diving costs and SCUBA gear for capstones and expeditions.

What is the time commitment of the program?

STREAMS is a year-round, weekend program with a winter and summer break. Once participants graduate from high school, they continue on as a BGD Scholar Alumna. In this role, they support the program in a leadership capacity.

What does my daughter need to participate in the program?

Participants are required to have a bathing suit and a SCUBA kit, which consists of mask, snorkel, fins and booties. The SCUBA kit can be purchased from your local dive shop.

Do parents attend capstone expeditions or travel with their child?

Parents do NOT attend capstone expeditions/trips. There are a few Family & Friends overnight events per year that parents are welcome to attend.

Are there any travel requirements that parents should be aware for capstones and expeditions?

All participants must have a valid passport. Several of our trips are international. Prior to an international trip, passports must have at least 6 months left before the passport expires. If there is less than 6 months of time before the passport expiration date, parents are responsible for renewing their child’s passport.
