About

Mission:

The Society for Women in Marine Science brings together marine scientists of all career levels to discuss the diverse experiences of women in marine science, celebrate the research done by women in the field, and promote the visibility of women in the marine science community.

Workshops

Several workshops are offered throughout the year on various topics that range from preparing the undergraduate and graduate college application to career workshops and professional development

GS Scholar portrait

BGD Scholar Akai

Akai is currently in the 8th grade. She received her PADI open water certification at the age of 10. Akai is now a PADI Advanced Open Water diver with certifications in Whale Shark Conservation and Coral Restoration. She is working towards her Rescue Diver certification. SOME of Akai’s favorite dive experiences include the Tongue of the Ocean, the Ocean Voyager exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium and the Blue holes on Andros Island.

BGD Scholar Symantha

Symantha is a senior year as a BGD Scholar and is looking forward to transitioning to a BGD Scholar Alumna. Symantha is a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver with specialty certifications in Underwater Archeology, Whale Shark Conservation and Coral Conservation. Symantha’s ocean adventures includes diving the Red Sea; Andros Island and Key Largo.

BGD Scholar Skye

Skye is a BGD Scholar Alumna is currently completing her freshman year at Coastal Carolina University where she is studying Marine Science. Skye is a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver with specialty certifications in Underwater Archeology, Whale Shark Conservation and Coral Conservation. Skye’s ocean adventures includes diving the Red Sea while on capstone in Egypt; Andros Island and the Florida Keys.
